Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes etched her name into the history books on the second day of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Junior Championships in Singapore by becoming the first swimmer from the country  to ever win gold at the event as she claimed the women’s 50 metres breaststroke title.

Gunes surged to victory by clocking 30.78sec, finishing  ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Hansson, while Katie Matts of Britain came through to take bronze.

“It’s a very good competition in a very nice pool and I’m really happy that I’m here and I came first,” she said.

“Today I swam really well, I’m in the best age for this event so I had to show my best.”

Robert Glinta also made history on day two as his victory in the 100m backstroke was the first-ever by a Romanian man at the event.

He came home in a time of 54.30, 0.34 seconds in front of nearest challenger Michael Taylor of the United States, with Britain’s Luke Greenbank earning another podium finish for his country as he was third.

Elsewhere, Australia’s Minna Atherton built on the gold medal she helped secure for their 4x200m freestyle relay team yesterday, clinching the women’s 100m backstroke crown in a world junior record 59.58.

Atherton was in superb form as she proved far too strong for the rest of the field in the race, touching the wall 0.20 seconds before American Claire Adams, while New Zealand’s Bobbi Gichard did enough to win bronze.

The other world junior record to fall came in the 4x100m mixed medley relay as the Russian quartet, comprised of Irina Prikhodko, Anton Chupkov, Daniil Pakhomov and Arina Openysheva, powered to a dominant success, clocking 3:45.85 to ensure they topped the podium ahead of Australia and the United States.

Chupkov also claimed an individual triumph as he won the men’s 100m breaststroke thanks to a time of 1min 00.19sec, just 0.07 seconds outside the world junior record he set in the event yesterday.

Clyde Lewis added a second Australian gold with his victory in the men’s 200m individual medley in what proved to be a controversial race as Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez, who originally came second, was disqualified.

Hungarian Csaba Sos was upgraded to silver and Sean Grieshop took bronze, with Lewis breezing to a commanding win in a time of 2:00.15.

The US were also at the double as Maxime Rooney led home an American one-two in the men’s 200m freestyle as his time of 1:47.78 saw him clinch the gold in comfortable fashion, 0.66 seconds in front of yesterday’s 400m freestyle winner Grant Shoults.

Sierra Schmidt completed a decent day for the American contingent as she took the women’s 800m honours in a championship record 8:27.55, with Simona Quadarella claiming silver and Holly Hibbott of Britain the bronze.

China were able to secure their first gold of the event at the OCBC Aquatic Centre at the Singapore Sports Hub as Wang Siqi won the women’s 200m butterfly in 2:08.24.

Australian Tamsin Cook sealed silver while Hannah Kukurgya got the better of Cassidy Bayer for bronze.
