The recently renovated Bill Farrell Wrestling Center has been officially dedicated to the former head coach following a ceremony held at the venue, jointly hosted by USA Wrestling and the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center (OTC).

The Center, located on the OTC site, had undergone a $325,000 (£207,000/€285,000) facelift and has now been named after Farrell, who coached the American freestyle team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

He was himself an athlete with the New York Athletic Club before he went on to become an innovator in the wrestling products industry with Japanese equipment company Asics.

A variety of wrestling dignitaries, as well as Farrell’s friends and family, were in attendance at the ceremony, including two-times Olympic champion and three-times world champion Bruce Baumgartner and Olympic champion Steve Fraser.

The ribbon was cut by Farrell’s sons Leigh and Kyle, who were also presented with a special award.

“Bill Farrell was the most consequential figure in the history of USA Wrestling,” USA Wrestling chief executive Rich Bender said.

“What we are today, we are standing squarely on his shoulders.

“USA Wrestling is what we are because of the vision that he had, and the support that he gave to wrestlers.”

It is hoped the eight-mat facility, which also has an expanded cardio area and brand-new offices for staff members, will help the development of American wrestlers, particularly as they prepare for the upcoming World Championships, due to take place from September 7 to 15 in Las Vegas.

“In the past, our practice times were very strict and we were always working around the men’s schedules to find times,” defending 75 kilogrammes world champion Adeline Gray said.

“We can now train at the same times.

“The chance to have the space here to separate and have a private room is unbelievable as we were limited before.

“This is amazing, I thank you all for making this possible.

“This was something we needed and it will help our athletes have success.”

Fundraisers are still calling for a further $75,000 (£48,000/€66,000) to complete the renovation work at the facility and anyone who wants to donate can do so by clicking here.
