Spain’s Javier Gómez maintained his push to become the first athlete to win five International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championship titles after ending his long wait for victory at the ITU World Series event in Stockholm.

Gómez finished the day with an unsurpassed run to clock a winning time of 1 hour 49min 33sec and establish a 446 point lead at the top of the overall rankings with two races left in the season.

A last-minute surge from Portugal’s Joao Pereira saw him claim the silver medal ahead of Australia’s Aaron Royle, who had to settle for bronze.

South Africa’s Henri Schoeman was one of the first to reach the opening transition after storming through the two-lap swim with Spain’s Francesc Godoy, France’s Aurelien Raphael and Royle joining him.

Gómez found himself 22 seconds down after the first lap of the swim and although the field was slightly strung out following the conclusion of the second, it only took one turn around the cycling course for more than 20 competitors to come together.

It was still all to play for going into the run, during which a tough hill caused some groupings to shift and allowed Gómez, Pereira and Royle to move ahead.

Having ran as a trio in the first lap, Gómez made use of the second to break away before gradually increasing his lead in the third and fourth on his way to securing victory by a 45-second margin.

“I didn’t feel good with the swim, I was a little bit asleep at the start, so when I knew I was far behind I fought the second lap to move forward a little bit in the swim, I think I was the last person to make the first group on the bike,” said Gómez, who claimed his second World Triathlon Series win and sixth podium of the season.

“It was an intense first lap on the bike, and then after that I just worked to keep the distance between the second group.

“I knew I had a good chance to win the race.

“I felt pretty good in the run because I could control the pace the whole time, so I am pretty happy.”

The next elite men’s race in the ITU World Triathlon Series is scheduled to take place in Edmonton on September 6 before the Grand Final in Chicago on September 19.

Gómez’s compatriot Mario Mola is second is the overall standings on 3,374 points, followed by another Spaniard, Fernando Alarza, on 2,961 points.
