Czech Republic’s Martin Fuksa bounced back from the disappointment of finishing second in yesterday’s men’s C1 1,000 metres final to win the corresponding 500m title at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan.

The 22-year-old junior world champion lost on the line to Germany’s Sebastian Brendel yesterday, narrowly missing out on a maiden senior world title, but there was no danger of that happening again as he beat Moldova’s Oleg Tanovschi by more than half-a-second with a time of 1min 51.004sec.

Belarus’ Maksim Piatrou completed the podium, while Brendel had to settle for eighth place on this occasion.

"The plan for the race was easy, I wanted to win," said Fuksa.

"The wind was very strong but I had a lot of energy at the finish and I won.

"It’s perfect to win my first World Championships title."

Meanwhile in the men’s K1 200m final, Canada’s Mark De Jonge successfully defended his title to become the first man to win back-to-back titles since 2003.

De Jonge posted a time of 34.802sec to finish ahead of France’s Maxime Beaumont and Sweden’s Petter Menning in second and third respectively.

"It feels pretty good because it has been so close between the top three of us here the entire season," said De Jonge.

"So lining up right next to them was a little daunting but it was good to know that those were the two guys I had to stay ahead of.

"I just tried to focus on what I had to do and right off the start I had a bit of a lead so I was able to just maintain focus and keep pretty cool for the race.

"The plan was to kill it the first 50 [metres] because I know I’m pretty good after that and if I was ahead at the 50 [metres mark] I could probably stay ahead."

Elsewhere on a busy day of action, Lisa Carrington continued her domination of the women’s K1 events, winning the 200m final with a time of 40.060.

Success for the New Zealander, whose closest challengers were Poland’s Marta Walczykiewicz and Spain’s Teresa Portela, sees her join Canada’s Caroline Brunet at the top of the all-time women's K1 200m gold medal list with four.

Denmark’s René Holten Poulsen also added to his growing tally of gold medals by retaining the men’s K1 500m title.

The winner of yesterday’s men’s K1 1,000m crown clocked a time of 1:39.407 and was joined on the podium by silver medallist Tom Liebscher of Germany and third-placed Roman Anoshkin of Russia.
