The Netherlands’ Roy Korving continued his run at the EUBC European Confederation Continental Championships in Samokov, enjoying another impressive victory in the men’s under 91 kilogram heavyweight competition.

Korving had enjoyed a convincing victory in his first preliminary tie, as he knocked out Kosovo’s Pirro Quni, and the 20-year-old was unfazed by the challenge posed by his second round opponent Kevin Melhus of Norway.

A strong performance saw the Dutchman rewarded with a unanimous points victory with the three scores reading 30:26, 20:26, 30:37 in his favour, to see the rising star move into the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Korving's triumph also sees him move one step closer to achieving a quota place for this year's International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships.

Korving is now set to face the tricky task of defeating Bulgaria’s London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Tervel Pulev, who also claimed a unanimous points victory over Slovakia’s Erik Tlkanec in his second round match.

While Pulev’s progress continued in style, his team-mate Stefan Ivanov’s challenge in the under 56kg bantamweight division was surprisingly brought to an end, being beaten by Denmark’s Frederik Lundgaard Jensen.

The contest proved to be a tight one, with both boxers landing several successful punches as the contest developed.

It was the home fighter left empty-handed as Jensen was awarded a 29:28 win on points by all three judges.

“It was wonderful feeling to fight a Bulgarian boxer in Samokov today,” Jensen said.

“I built up a strong tactic with my coach, which was to fight from distance. I attacked with jabs, but after the first round I had to change things around and my fighting spirit dominated the bout.

“Sometimes it was difficult, but luckily I could win, and I know that I need to improve my level if I am to get a medal in the Championships.

One of the other surprises of the day was a defeat for Turkey's 2011 European Continental champion Fatih Keles in the men’s under 64kg light welterweight division.

Keles, who competed at London 2012, had no answer to Britain's Pat McCormack, who emergedas a unanimous points victor, being awarded the fight 30:27 on two judges’ scorecards and 29:28 on the third.

McCormack will now face the challenge of Johann Eduardo Orozco Ojeda in the quarter-finals after the Spaniard convincingly defeated Germany’s Kastriot Sopa on points.
