Uzbekistan are guaranteed their first-ever ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Continental Championships medal after welterweight Shakhnoza Nizamova beat Mongolia's Uranbileg Shinetsetseg to reach the semi-finals of the event in Wulanchabu, China.

Nizamova, who competed at last year’s Asian Games but failed to win a medal, produced a superb display to edge her rival, claiming victory on all three judges’ scorecards to seal a unanimous win and etch her name into the history books.

“I was too nervous in the opening round as this was my first bout in the Championships and I had only competed in a few contests this year,” she said.

“I know I am a medallist, but it is hard to believe it!”

Elsewhere on the second day of the event in China, India’s light flyweight Sarjubala Shamjetsabam Devi again got the better of Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat, reaching the semi-finals with a split decision in a rematch of their 2014 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships last four bout.

Raksat started the contest in ominous fashion, exhibiting her speed and movement in the first round but Devi then began to find her feet.

She fended off the quick combination punches of Raksat to win 2-1.

Trinh Thi Diem Kieu began an excellent day for Vietnam by ousting Chin Chian Hui of Taipei in the same division to set up a meeting with North Korea’s U Yong Gum.

Compatriot Ha Thi Linh progressed in the light welterweight category at the expense of South Korea’s Shim Hee Jung.

AIBA women’s world champion Josie Gabuco of the Philippines, considered one of the light flyweight favourites, was also in good form, claiming a third round stoppage in her bout against Uzbekistan's Gulasal Atakulova.

Sri Lanka’s Commonwealth Games quarter-finalist Kaluhath Gimhani Erandi Da Silva is another boxer through to the light flyweight semi-finals, proving too strong for Tajikistan’s Dilafruz Jafarova and being awarded a unanimous decision.

North Korea’s Pak Kyong Ok, world champion in 2012, is through to the next round of the light welterweight division thanks to a walkover in her bout with Thailand’s Supaporn Seesondee.

The competition is due to continue tomorrow with action in the light flyweight, flyweight, featherweight and the lightweight weight categories.
