Ukraine’s Daria Bilodid maintained her unbeaten record in 2015 as she claimed the gold medal in the girls under 44 kilogram category at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Cadet World Championships in Sarajevo.

The 14-year-old took her maiden world title thanks to victory over European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) winner Sofia Petitto of Italy as she managed to get her opponent to submit to ensure she topped the podium at the event for the first time.

Bilodid, daughter of double 73kg European Championships gold medallist Gennady, who was in the crowd in , Bosnia and Herzegovina capital to see her win gold, is now targeting success at Olympic Games level.

“My dream is to win the Olympic title, which is my greatest ambition,” she said.

“I am very pleased to win here in Sarajevo and in front of my parents.”

The two bronze medals in the category went to Japan’s Riko Igarashi and Jessica Silva of Brazil thanks to victories over Shirine Boukli of France and Russia’s Iuliia Ogarkova respectively.

Elsewhere on the opening day of the competition, where four gold medals were decided, Russian Olga Borisova secured her first-ever Cadet World Championships crown as she beat Oidovchimed Baasansuren of Mongolia in a hard-fought girls under 40kg final.

Following a scoreless match-up, Borisova was handed the win after Baasansuren, who beat top seed Lidia Marin of Romania in the semi-final, incurred one shido penalty for passivity.

Oumaima Bedioui of Turkey and Marin rounded off the podium, taking a bronze medal apiece.

In the boys under 50kg weight class, Aibolat Ystybay of Kazakhstan denied EYOF victor Biagio D Angelo of Italy his second consecutive international title, clinching gold by ippon in the final.

Angelo arrived in Sarajevo as the judoka to beat in the division but Ystybay was able to register the first score of the contest after one minute and 20 seconds and was then able to secure victory thanks to an ippon shortly after.

Cadet European team bronze medallist Kazbek Naguchev of Russia was able to earn a spot on the podium by edging Giorgi Niazashvili of Georgia, with the other available bronze going to Mongolia’s Narmandakh Bayanmunkh, who beat Brazil's Joao Paulo Correia.

Bulgaria’s Denislav Ivanov added Cadet World Championships gold to his European crown as he saw off Tofig Mammadov of Azerbaijan in final of the boys under 55kg category in the last bout of the evening.

Ivanov locked Mammadov in a waza-ari which forced the Azerbaijani judoka to submit, handing an emotional Bulgarian a deserved victory.

Russia’s Khamzat Akhmarov added to his nation’s medal haul as he won bronze, with Vano Khubashvili of Georgia also sealing a spot on the podium.

The event in Sarajevo is due to continue tomorrow with the girls under 48kg and under 52kg categories as well as the boys under 60kg and under 66kg divisions.
