This year’s International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Glasgow are set to be the biggest ever as 615 athletes from 91 countries have registered to participate in the competition after the draw was conducted today.

The event, due to take place at The SSE Hydro in the Scottish city from October 23 to November 1, is the governing body’s flagship competition and will see gymnasts from all over the world descend on Glasgow.

Both Honduras and the Cayman Islands will be making their debut at an Artistic Gymnastic World Championships during the 10-day event, held at the same venue which staged the netball and gymnastic competitions during last year's Commonwealth Games.

The qualification phase of the World Championships is even more significant for competitors as the top eight teams will secure a place at next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Those countries who finish between ninth and 16th will have another chance to earn a spot at next year’s Olympics as the they will all progress to the Rio 2016 test event, due to be held in April, where the top four teams will book their place at the Games.

Individual qualification slots are also up for grabs as gymnasts who claim medals in the apparatus event will automatically seal a spot in Rio.

The draw, made at the Glasgow City Chambers, is seen as a key milestone on the path to the event as it determines when teams will compete, which can often have an effect on planning and strategy.

In Glasgow, there are 12 qualification subdivisions for women, due to take place from October 23 to 24, and eight for the men, scheduled for the following two days.

The draw itself was conducted by both men’s and women’s Technical Committee Presidents, Russia's five-time Olympic champion Nellie Kim and American Steve Butcher, each visiting Glasgow to inspect preparations and visit venues.

“This is a very thrilling time, the start of Olympic qualification,” Butcher said.

“The world is excited and gymnastics is developing.

“This competition will feature a record number of participating gymnasts in the history of Olympic qualifying World Championships.

“It also demonstrates how much gymnastics has been developing throughout the world and many federations will be involved in their first ever Olympic qualification.”

Aside from Olympic qualification, the event will also give fans the opportunity to witness history as Japan’s Kohei Uchimura, unbeaten since the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, goes for an unprecedented sixth consecutive men’s all-around title.

In the women’s competition, American 18-year-old Simone Biles, a six-time world champion, will bid to become the first woman to claim three successive all-around crowns.
