Canada's men seal Rio 2016 Olympic hockey qualification along with US and New Zealand women

Canada have become the latest men's hockey team to secure a Rio 2016 Olympic qualification slot, while United States and New Zealand have each guaranteed themselves a place on the women's side following the Pan American Games here.

Canada narrowly overcame Brazil in a shootout after a 0-0 draw in their semi-final to set up a final against gold medal favourites Argentina.

Only a single qualification spot is available to the winners but because the Argentinians already sealed a place by virtue of their performances on the World League circuit earlier this year, it will be taken by the Canadians regardless of the result in the final here tomorrow.

They become the ninth team to secure their place after Brazil did so by virtue of securing a top-six finish earlier at these Games, with this the criteria stipulated by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and International Olympic Committee for them to merit a host nation place.

As well as Argentina, defending champions Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, Belgium and Great Britain have all qualified via the World League while India secured a spot after winning last year's Asian Games title in Incheon.

The remaining three spots will not be finalised until after the various Continental Championships due to finish in October.

On the women's side, US beat Canada in their semi-final to guarantee a spot as they were up against already-qualified Argentina in the final.

They ultimately won the final 2-1 for a successful title defence.

Brazil failed to enter a team here, meaning they forfeit the opportunity to send a team.

The FIH have now confirmed how New Zealand will be the main beneficiaries, having been selected instead after being the next highest ranked placed team at the Hockey World League Semi-Finals.

They and the US will join Asian Games champions South Korea, along with Britain, China, Germany, Australia and Argentina, who all qualified via the World League events.

Like on the men's side, the final three other slots will be decided following the continental championships later this year.
