Honduras' President Juan Orlando Hernandez Alvarado has called on the World Taekwondo Federation to help develop the sport in his country following a meeting with Chungwon Choue at the governing body’s headquarters in Seoul.

Hernandez hopes the WTF can aid with the social problems found in the Latin American nation and asked the organisation to send more Korean taekwondo instructors to Honduras for training.

“Violence is one of the serious social problems facing Latin American countries, and I think taekwondo is the most effective tool to solve the issue,” he said.

The Honduras President arrived in the South Korean capital for a three-day visit at the invitation of Korean President Park Geun-hye.

His requests were well received by Choue, the WTF President, who hopes to make Honduras “one of the main hubs” of the sport in the region after expressing his gratitude to Hernandez for his special interest in taekwondo.

“The WTF will do its best to help promote taekwondo in Honduras by dispatching more members of the WTF taekwondo demonstration team and sending taekwondo equipment,” Choue said.

“The WTF plans to make Honduras as one of the taekwondo hubs in the Latin American region.”

As a result of the talks at the WTF headquarters, Hernandez then instructed Honduras Ambassador to Korea Michel Idiaquez Baradat, himself a 4th Kukkiwon Dan holder, to further the talks with taekwondo’s governing body as they bid to improve the standard of sport in the country.

Taekwondo has enjoyed a rapid growth in the Latin American region, with Hondouras one of the main countries to have enjoyed steady development in recent years.

Hernandez's visit to Seoul comes after he attended a WTF President-hosted dinner for former Honduras President Porfirio Lobo Sosa back in February 2011, and Hernandez is hoping relations between his country and taekwondo can continue.

A Honduras taekwondo player has never won a gold medal at a WTF World Championships or Olympic Games, though Miguel Ferrera did reach the last 16 of the under 80 kilograms tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

He was also the country’s Flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony.
