German media company ProSiebenSat.1 has completed a takeover of German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) New Media, the operator of television channel Sportdeutschland.TV, it has been announced.

The development will see the company, who now own a 57 per cent stake in DOSB New Media, work with the DOSB to enhance the content on the channel, with an emphasis on making more people aware of what they produce.

The DOSB will remain involved with the project as a shareholder.

ProSiebenSat.1 will promote and develop the sports coverage on the channel along with the help of one of their subsidiaries, SevenOne Media, widely considered a pioneer in the digital video market in Germany.

The channel itself offers extensive coverage of more than 70 sports, many of them Olympic, with Volleyball Bundesliga, the Table Tennis Bundesliga and the second-division Basketball Bundesliga all regularly shown.

It is hoped that the development will increase the coverage and popularity of both Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

“We see large potential and a long-term trend in online and mobile live sports footage,” ProSiebenSat.1 chief commercial officer Markan Karajica said.

“Our target will be to provide live coverage of the large variety of leagues and sports competitions for the increasing fan community on the internet.

“We look forward to our partnership with the German Olympic Sports Confederation through which we want to increase popularity of Olympic and non-Olympic sports.”

Content is available on Sportdeutschland.TV as live streams or on-demand, with DOSB New Media chief executive Oliver Beyer claiming the partnership will help expand several areas of the channel.

“The commitment of ProSiebenSat.1 opens up entirely new perspectives to expand according to the wishes of our Sportdeutschland,” DOSB New Media chief executive Oliver Beyer said.

“TV spectators, but also the cooperation both with sports organizations, tour operators as well as with other media partners TV and Internet area are to expand.

“I thank on this occasion our founding shareholders DOSB and GSC that it allows the launch of Sportdeutschland.TV with their full support.”
