Singapore has appointed Low Teo Ping as its Chef de Mission for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, it was announced today.

The 70-year-old Low, a veteran sports administrator who is vice-president at the Singapore National Olympic Council and President of the Singapore Rugby Union, served as Team Singapore's Chef de Mission at last year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

There, the team won a total of 17 medals, including eight gold, the country's most successful performance at a Commonwealth Games outside Asia.

Low also led Singapore at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima.

“It is my privilege to be appointed the Chef de Mission to Team Singapore for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by the Singapore National Olympic Council," Low, President of the Singapore Sailing Federation from 1999 to 2010, said.

“As of now, our sailors and swimmers have successfully qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games.

"There are many other athletes who are working very hard to meet the mark to represent Singapore at the 2016 Games.

"I wish them all the best in qualification and their preparations.”

Low is due to attend the Rio 2016 Chefs de Mission seminar from August 17 until 21 in Brazil.

“The Rio 2016 Chefs de Mission Seminar will present the details we need to help prepare the team when they are in Rio for the Games," he said.

"We will also be there exactly one year before the Games to experience the climate during the Games.

"I look forward to visiting Rio and learning more about the venues to bring back information vital to our team.”

Singapore made its Olympic debut at London in 1948 and has competed at every Games since, apart from Tokyo 1964 and Moscow 1980.

The country won its first medal at Rome in 1960 when weightlifter Tan Howe Liang claimed a silver in the lightweight division.

It had to wait 48 years for its next medal, a silver in the women's team table tennis at Beijing 2008.

At London 2012 Singapore won two medals, both in table tennis.

Feng Tianwei won bronze in the women's singles and then joined with Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu for another bronze in the women's team event.

They were part of a team of 23 athletes from Singapore who competed in nine sports at London 2012.
