Danang 2016 has unveiled the official logo and mascot for the fifth Asian Beach Games in Vietnam, following approval by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The logo is designed to mimic waves and sand in the shape of young and dynamic athletes performing sport, with the OCA symbol inside.

All parts of the logo rise up to form a large "V" shape, signifying Vietnam, victory and the number five in Roman numerals.

It is claimed to affirm the role of the host country, as well as highlight the spirit of competition and the athletes’ aspirations of winning.

The combination of sea and sand waving together is said to reflect the strength and strong will of Vietnamese sport, and carry the message of friendliness and a warm welcome for all 45 national delegations.

It is also said to represent the solidarity and friendship of the Asian sports family with the expectation of a successful fifth Asian Beach Games.

The mascot is a swiftlet, a distinct characteristic of the coastal central south of Vietnam which is famous for birds' nests - a valuable product in general and a particular speciality of Khánh Hòa province.

The mascot has a V-shaped tail and is holding a Torch which apparently represents solidarity, peace and vitality, with the OCA sun and the traditional waves on the outfit symbolising the Asian Beach Games.

Danang 2016 is due to take place from September 24 in October 3, shortly after the end of Rio 2016.

The Games, which are due to take place in Danang and Nha Trang, are set to feature a number of different sports, including Vietnamese martial art Vovinam.

It will mark the third multi-sports Asian-level competition in Vietnam following the 2003 Southeast Asian Games and the 2009 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.

Hanoi was scheduled to host the 2019 Asian Games but withdrew in April of last year, citing "economic pressures".

Phuket in Thailand hosted the fourth edition of the biennial Asian Beach Games last November.
