The United States booked their place in the next round of the Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships as they came from a goal down to beat Scotland 2-1 at St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent in England.

Scottish captain Jonathan Paterson gave his side a deserved early lead when he rounded the American goalkeeper and tapped home to ensure they got off to a perfect start.

Two goals in four minutes shortly after half-time, however, turned the tie on its head as Jarret Razon sent over a teasing delivery into the box which was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Barry Halloran.

The Americans kept the pressure on and they then went in front as a mix-up between Ian Paton and Craig Connell allowed Seth Jahn to pick up the pieces and edge his team ahead.

The goal proved to be the winner which consolidated the United States’ second place in Group C.

They will be joined in the next round by Brazil, who thumped Venezuela 6-0.

The Copa América champions made light work of their fellow South Americans and recorded their second straight victory by a six-goal margin.

Evandro broke the deadlock early on from the penalty spot before Felipe Rafael found the net from distance and Igor added a third.

Jonatas ensured the Brazilians would have the result all but sewn up at the half-way stage, while further strikes from Pineda Teran and Carols in the second period put the gloss on another impressive display by the third best team in the world.

In Group D, The Netherlands secured a comfortable 4-0 win over underdogs Northern Ireland, although they were made to endure a frustrating first half as their opponents’ resilient defence held firm.

They eventually opened the scoring in the 40th minute thanks to Jeroen Saedt, before doubling their advantage shortly after.

Peter Kooij made sure there was no way back for the Northern Irish side as he wrapped up the three points on the hour mark and De Vos bagged his second of the game to complete the rout.

The other contest in the group was a much tighter affair as Argentina recovered from their opening defeat to the Dutch with a narrow 2-0 win over Canada as Mariano Cortes and Matias Bassi kept their qualification hopes alive.

The seven-a-side tournament in England, which serves as a qualifier for the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year, is due to continue tomorrow when the hosts take on Ukraine in Group A, while Republic of Ireland go up against Portugal and Russia meet Australia.
