Mexico were held to a frustrating goalless draw in their Copa América Group A opener against Bolivia at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar.

The 2001 runners-up had arguably the better chances in a match that failed to catch fire.

Jesús Manuel Corona was a livewire for the Mexicans early on but the first chance of the game fell to team-mate Juan Carlos Medina, who sliced a 20-yard effort wide in the 12th minute.

The best chance of the first half came the way of Bolivia’s Marcelo Martins Moreno just three minutes later when he met a cross from Ricardo Pedriel at the near post but was denied by the woodwork.

Bolivia threatened again just before half-time as Jhasmani Campos' swerving 25-yard strike was turned away by goalkeeper Jesús Corona but Mexico had the better of it after the break.

Raúl Jiménez missed their best chance of the match in the 66th minute, just moments after coming on as a substitute.

The Atletico Madrid forward headed wide when free in the box after some good work from Jesús Manuel Corona down the left.

Mexico had a penalty appeal turned down in the 79th minute after Javier Aquino went down under a challenge from Leonel Morales, with there appearing to be no contact.

Vicente Vuoso also had a close-range shot blocked as Mexico were forced to settle for a share of the spoils ahead of their next encounter against hosts Chile.

They’re likely to be without veteran defender Rafael Márquez for that match after he limped off in the 64th minute.

Bolivia meet Ecuador in their next Group A clash, while tomorrow's action is due to see the start of Group B as reigning champions Uruguay get their campaign under way against Jamaica and Argentina face Paraguay.
