The eagerly-anticipated World Series of Boxing (WSB) final between Cuba Domadores and the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan will take place in Astana on June 20 and 21, it has been announced.

The decision may cause surprise in the boxing world as it could be suggested it gives the Kazakh team an unfair home advantage in the competition’s showpiece match-up.

“This season’s WSB finals will be one of the most exciting boxing events of the whole year,” said WSB chief executive Karim Bouzidi.

“We will have the opportunity to witness the world’s two best teams - the invincible Cuba Domadores, defending champions, and the powerful Astana Arlans Kazakhstan - go head to head in Astana.

“I am confident that these two nights will produce an incredible show of pure boxing action in a country known for its genuine passion for the noble art.”

Defending champions the Domadores will enter the contest as favourites following a staggering performance this season, where they have managed to maintain their unbeaten record throughout the campaign.

They thrashed the Mexico Guerreros 10-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals after comfortably topping Group A thanks to their impressive 100 per cent record of 14 wins from 14 matches.

“World Series of Boxing is a very important boxing challenge for my team,” Domadores head coach Rolando Acebal said.

“We have trained extremely hard and I always tell my boys that WSB Trophy has a special meaning, as it is the only one we can win together, as a team.”

The Astana Arlans Kazakhstan will however fancy their chances of causing an upset on home soil and they progressed to the showpiece finale by virtue of a storming 9-1 success in their last four bout with the Russian Boxing Team.

The Kazakh outfit, who finished at the summit of Group B, will be looking to repeat their success in 2013, where they claimed the series title, in what will be their third final.

It is the two-legged final that amateur boxing fans all over the world would have wanted and it will be contested by the best two teams from this year’s Series.

“The last weeks of the regular season have been very challenging for the boxers to reach once again the finals,” Arlans head coach Marat Jakiyev said.

“It will be the third time for Arlans at this level and I’m particularly excited that my country hosts this competition in Astana and the team will have the chance to compete in front of thousands of home fans.”
