Defending champions Russia head the eight team line-up for this year’s sambo President’s Cup in Manchester.

The founders of the sport will be joined by Great Britain, who they beat 7-2 in the 2014 final, as well as France, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain and two teams of the Commonwealth.

The second edition of the competition is scheduled to take place at Event City on September 26 and marks the second time it has been held in the United Kingdom, with Kent hosting last year’s tournament.

Men will compete in the 62 kilogram, 68kg, 74kg, 82kg and 90kg weight categories, while women will contest the 60kg and 68kg classes.

Spain and Britain have already determined the composition of their seven-strong teams, while Bulgaria, Russia and France are expected to do so after the European Championships, due to be staged here from tomorrow until Monday (May 18).

Britain are represented by Bradley Belsey, Casey Belsey, Daniel Diamond, Danny Carrot, Danny Roberts, Debbie Jackson and Emma Herd, while Spain’s team comprises Luis Marmol Dominguez, Yerai Jimenez Lopez, Aitor Hugo Marcatan, Eduardo Martin Carles, Ruben Diaz Fresno, Yaiza Jimenez Lopez and Irene Martinez Gala.

Organisers claim the main aim of the event is to promote sambo with the help of new, creative and innovative solutions related to the format of the competition, putting particular emphasis on entertainment activities and original marketing solutions.

One way in which they aim to achieve this is by holding a demonstration tournament within the President's Cup - the British Combat Sambo Grand Slam.

"The tournament will be held in the open weight category, eight sambists will take part in it," said Michael Parker, President of the Sambo Association of the British Commonwealth and a member of the competition Organising Committee of the competition.

"Two of them will be representatives of the United Kingdom, and the remaining six will be selected based on the world rankings.

"Athletes will compete for the 'Championship belt' and a cheque for a large sum, which we, the organisers of the Cup, are not yet disclosing.

“The process of selecting candidates for the British Combat Sambo Grand Slam will complete immediately after the end of the European Championship."

Belarus and the Commonwealth’s Africa finished third behind Russia and Britain at the 2014 President’s Cup, which also saw Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth’s America compete.

The Cup is made of gold and silver and encrusted with 12 types of natural stone - jade, jasper, turquoise, mother of pearl, rhodonite, beryl, lazurite, charoite, amber, malachite, aventurine and jadeite.
