The 2015 Oceania Judo Open will be held at the WIN Stadium in Wollongong, Australia, the Oceania Judo Union has announced.

The New South Wales city had also hosted last year's event.

The 2015 edition is due to take place on November 14 and 15.

It is hoped the event will continue to build on the sport’s growing reputation in the region.

Last year’s competition was widely heralded as a huge success as the sport carries on its development in the region.

It will be another opportunity for the continent's top judoka to take part in a major tournament following the Oceania Championships, which was held in New Caledonia's capital Nouméa, in April.

That event offered them the chance to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and featured eight Commonwealth Games medallists from New Zealand.

New Zealand is aiming to send up to five judokas to the Rio 2016, which would mark a significant improvement on London 2012, where Moira De Villiers was the country’s sole representative.

A number of New Zealanders are currently ranked in the top 30 of their respective weight classes, with De Villiers placed 18th in the world, Koster 19th, Ivica Pavlinic 22nd, and Manuel and Dill-Russell 24th.

Despite the fact that the sport of judo is growing in the region, Oceania has never hosted the International Judo Federation (IJF) World Championships.

Oceaniac nations have also struggled to establish themselves at Olympic level, with Australia the only nation to have managed a podium finish.

Theodore Boronovskis won bronze in the open class at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Maria Pekli achieved the same performance in the women's lightweight division on home soil at Sydney 2000.
