Baku 2015 have announced they have held a successful test event at the Olympic Stadium today as preparations continue for the inaugural European Games next month.

The event was attended by 15,000 Baku 2015 Flamekeepers and Organising Committee staff, where they were treated to a show of entertainment from Celebrity Ambassadors such as Tunzale, who performed her song entitled “Baku Smiles”, written especially for the Games.

It gave Baku 2015 the opportunity to test operations in an arena which appears to once again being referred to as the Olympic Stadium, rather than the National Stadium as it had up until now, including security arrangements and spectator and VIP movements, as well as ticketing systems and general transport practices.

“This was a great opportunity to thank our Flamekeepers for the important contribution they will make to the inaugural European Games by giving them the first glimpse inside the magnificent new Olympic Stadium,” Baku 2015 chief operating officer Simon Clegg said.

“It was also very useful from an operational point of view, ensuring that we are fully prepared to deliver world-class Games next month.”

The event at the Olympic Stadium, which will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as athletics competitions during the Games, was part of a wide range of exercises designed to ensure Baku 2015 are fully prepared come the start of the event.

It comes after sporting tests were held in boxing, which took place at the Crystal Hall, and wrestling, which was staged at the Heydar Aliyev Arena, last month.

Previous competitions have also been held in gymnastics, BMX and triathlon and Baku 2015 are set to test all venues before the Games begin.

“Building the capability of people to stage world class events is a valuable legacy of the European Games for our host country, which has not undertaken anything on this scale before,” Baku 2015 director of operational capability and readiness Gavin McAlpine added.

“Events such as this help us to build competence and confidence across the organisation and with our partners ahead of the Games.

“With 34 days to go, it is extremely rewarding to see how far we have come in such a short time.

“Through our ground-breaking Games Academy initiative, we have fast-tracked the development of a generation of young professionals, many of whom were still studying when Baku was awarded the Games, and are now performing key roles throughout the organisation.”

The first-ever European Games are due begin on June 12 and scheduled to finish June 28.

They will feature 20 sports, 12 of which will offer Olympic qualification for Rio 2016.
