There have been no alterations so far to the proposed sports programme for the Durban 2022 Commonwealth Games, although changes could be possible should the South African city be confirmed as hosts in September, bid chairman Mark Alexander has revealed.

It follows today's completion of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) Evaluation Commission's four-day visit, led by honorary secretary Louise Martin, with discussions held regarding transport, security, venues, accommodation, medical and legacy project teams, as well the sports programme.

Alexander insisted that at this stage there have been no discussions regarding the addition of sports to their bid, officially launched at Mansion House in London, on March 2.

“We said when we launched our bid that these are the sports we have chosen, they were chosen based upon the sports list at the time,” he told insidethegames.

“Come the 2nd of September, we will work with the CGF to find what is good for them and whether then to make minor adjustments to the programme.

“That was our plan from day one, that is our plan now.”

The General Assembly, in addition to seeing the Durban 2022 bid proposal put to a vote, will also see the CGF’s new seven-year strategic plan, “Transformation 2022” voted upon.

If the proposal, currently in a consultation phase and subject to alterations, is voted through, the list of compulsory sports will rise from 10 to 16, with one of the new ones being artistic gymnastics, a sport currently not earmarked for the Games in Durban.

Additionally International Cycling Union President Brian Cookson remains confident track cycling, which has featured at every Games since 1934 but remains a non-compulsory discipline, will end up taking place in Durban, either on an outdoor track or on a proposed new venue 80 kilometres from the city in Pietermaritzburg, where mountain biking will also be held.

Cricket is another sport which could potentially be added, insidethegames understands.

Alexander believes the Evaluation Commission have been encouraged by the “nuts and bolts” of the city’s bid, although admits alterations are required.

“There are little tweaks with how we have laid out things in the indoor events and there are changes that we have to do at the swimming events, so there are changes,” he said.

“We hope that we the Commonwealth Games Associations come out we will be close to a final plan, you could almost say that we are in delivery phase mode now.”

Durban 2022 chief executive Tubby Reddy echoed Alexander’s confidence by vowing that Durban will “deliver a world-class event, on time and within a strict budget".

In her closing remarks of the Evaluation Commission visit, Martin reflected how the South African city had inspired the five-member panel with the “prospect and potential” of hosting Africa’s first Commonwealth Games.

“We leave Durban with a clear sense of opportunity - a deeper understanding of how they will optimise their plans and maximise the opportunities for young people, sport, business and communities from hosting Africa’s first Commonwealth Games,” the Scot said.

“The alignment of the bid with the country’s National Development Plan and the Province’s ambitions for youth engagement is particularly powerful.”
