Cathy Freeman has led the Anzac Day commemorations to remember the Australian Olympians who enlisted in World War One.

The Sydney 2000 400 metres champion, a Camp Gallipoli ambassador, joined millions of Australians to mark the day of remembrance for those who have served for their country at Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) services.

“It gives me an even greater awareness of the utmost respect I have for our ANZACs of the past, present and future,” said Freeman, for whom the day is tied to the memory of her great-grandfather, Private Frank Fisher, who served in Egypt and Palestine during World War One in the 11 Light Horse Regiment.

To mark the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, the Australian Olympic Committee has compiled a list of 40 Olympians who enlisted in World War One in recognition of their service to the country.
