The French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) has unveiled its new emblem in the wake of Paris City Hall’s backing of a proposed bid from the French capital to stage the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The emblem, which honours the French cockerel, was revealed by CNOSF President Denis Masseglia and is said to be fully in line with the new International Olympic Committee (IOC) directives.

The directives dictate that the Olympic Rings cannot take up more than a third of National Olympic Committee logos, and that the name of the respective nations no longer needs to be visible.

The cockerel  first appeared on French athletes’ jerseys during the 20th century, and has since featured in various forms, but was then abandoned before the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

Henri Sérandour, CNOSF President at the time, decided an overhaul of the graphics was necessary, but 17 years later, arguably the best-known symbol of France has taken its place on the logo once more.

The need to meet the IOC’s guidelines reinforced the desire of the CNOSF for a new graphic identity, which was more meaningful, more dynamic and better suited to its ambitions.

Leroy Tremblot, a design agency specialising in sport, was selected by the CNOSF to redesign its visual identity.

"This is a very proud [moment] to have been selected by the CNOSF to accompany this strategic mission,” said Tremblot Antoine, founder and creative director Leroy Tremblot.

"The new identity is the values of the Olympic spirit, while embodying the pride and French sporting ambition in major Olympic competitions.”

The decision to change all the logo elements in favour of a new visual identity was taken by the Masseglia and supported by CNOSF’s Board of Directors.

The CNOSF is expected to make a formal declaration of Paris' 2024 Olympic and Paralympic bid by the end of June having formed an association with the State and the Paris region to finalise it.
