The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has revealed a stellar list of sporting events which are due to take place in the country this year, including the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships and the International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Championships.

The Asian nation plans to host a total of 89 high-quality competitions, comprising of 55 international events, a rise from last year's figure of 43, and local and regional tournaments.

Doha will prove to be a central hub for global sport this year as the Qatari capital will stage the AIBA World Boxing Championships from October 5 to 18, before the IPC Athletics World Championships the following week.

Both top-class competitions will be held in Qatar for the very first time and the World Boxing Championships will provide athletes with the chance to earn qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Also due to take place in Qatar during an exciting 12 months of sport is the inaugural Asian Youth Athletics Championships, open to any athlete under the age of 17, which will be held on May 8 to 11, directly before Doha officially opens the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League season on May 15.

These events, which carry a high global profile, will help aid the development of athletics ahead of Doha staging the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

The competitions don’t end there though as Qatar will also host ATP and WTA tennis tour events, a leg of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup and International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour in November 2015.

QOC director of sport Khaleel Al Jabir says hosting these events will greatly help the development of sport in the country

“The rise in international sporting events hosted in Qatar shows how we continue to be committed to using our experience of hosting world-class events and our state-of-the-art facilities to organise events that will have an impact on the development of sport in our nation, our region and globally,” said QOC director of sport affairs, Khaleel Al Jabir.

“It is our ambition to use these events to inspire a new generation of young people through sport and to promote an active and healthy lifestyle amongst our people.

“We look forward to welcoming people from around the world to Qatar to share our passion for sport, our warm hospitality and our love for life.”
