Hosts New Caledonia claimed eight of the 10 available gold medals at the Oceania Judo Championships’ Veterans Open in Nouméa.

Jerome Papai was the stand out performer as he claimed the Under-50 Open crown, ahead of compatriots Pierre-Armand Colas and Alexander Kelly, and the men’s three over 100 kilograms title at the expense of Australia’s Jason Ginn.

New Caledonia also got the better of Australia in the men’s two and six under 73kg categories as Paul Dulac and Jean Luc Bretegnier overcame Christophe Legaud and Andy Bell respectively.

The home nation dominated the podiums in the men’s three and eight under 81kg classes with Abedias Trindade de Abreu edging out Jonathan Berger and Mickael Cano in the former, and Jacques Lecomte outdoing Franck Algheieri in the latter.

In the men’s four under 100kg category, Colas and Kelly finished either side of silver medallist Bruno Damo of French Polynesia, while in the men’s four under 90kg class, Gerard Chadfeau was followed onto the podium by Damo’s fellow countrymen Thierry Vitielli and Rehiia Davio.

French Polynesia managed to prevent New Caledonia from taking a clean sweep of top honours as Arnaud Laboube triumphed in the Over-50 Open, ahead of Bell and Bretegnier, and the men’s six under 81kg category, in front of New Caledonia’s Eric Jonckiere.

“We would like to thank New Caledonia Organising Committee and all the volunteers who put on a great tournament,” read a statement on the Oceania Judo Union’s website.
