Baku 2015 has announced that more than 1,300 journalists have applied to cover the inaugural European Games.

The number of applications, which excludes broadcasters, is unprecedented for an event taking place in Azerbaijan, with them all due to be processed in the coming weeks.

“The response has been quite amazing and it reinforces the fact that the first ever European Games is one of the most exciting and important additions to the global sporting calendar in more than 50 years,” said Simon Clegg, chief operating officer of Baku 2015.

“The accreditation system will be conducted under the spirit set down by the International Olympic Committee in the Olympic Charter, which has been adopted by the European Olympic Committees.”

Clegg also confirmed that all accreditations will act as visas into Azerbaijan, providing access up to 30 days before the Opening Ceremony and up to 60 days after the Closing Ceremony.

“Accredited media, the European Games family, and all those visiting the Games will be most welcome in Azerbaijan to attend this fantastic event which will showcase this young and dynamic country,” he added.

Last month, Baku 2015 extended its press accreditation deadline to April 3, pushing it back four weeks in response to a high level of interest and several requests for more time to submit applications.

Members of the press are advised to book their rooms in the newly-constructed Media Village as soon as possible with spaces limited.

Inclusive of breakfast, single rooms cost €50 (£36/$54) per night, while twin rooms are charged at €65 (£47/$71) per night.

The Media Village is adjacent to the Athletes' Village, and as well as serving as a transport hub for all venues, it will also provide working and catering facilities.
