South Korean Olympic champion Jin Jong-oh has secured gold in the men’s 10 metres air pistol final at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Changwon.

The five-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion, who has already secured a Rio 2016 Olympic quota place, sealed a final score of 206.0 points to smash the previous final world record of 202.8 points, which was set by Vietnam's Hoàng Xuân Vinh at last year’s ISSF World Cup in Fort Benning, United States.

Jin got the medal match underway with two strong series to top the scoreboard after the first shots, before closing the match in first with a five-point advantage on silver medallist Naung Ye Tun of Myanmar, who claimed a Rio 2016 Olympic quota place.

The bronze medal went to India’s Commonwealth Games champion Jitu Rai after his performance saw him scoring 181.1 points in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Athens 2004 Olympic champion Matthew Emmons of the US claimed gold in the 50m rifle prone and a Rio 2016 Olympic quota spot.

After shooting an extreme qualification score of 632.0 points, just 0.3-point shy of the world record, he led the medal match with 208.3 points to top the podium for the first time in this World Cup event since 2007, with his last medal being a bronze in 2010.

“It has been a great competition, I am really happy with my scores.” Emmons said.

“It has been a while since my last World Cup medal in this event.

“I have changed my rifle, and that helped me.

“I have also been working a lot on it, and it's paying off.

“Things have changed a lot since the 2004 Olympic Games, the sport has changed, with the new scoring system and the new finals format in place.

“And my life has changed too, I have a new son since two years, and we moved to the Czech Republic, where my wife comes from.

“The main aim of the season is now to secure as many points as I can at ISSF World Cups, in order to gain direct access to the 2016 US Olympic team.”

Home athlete Kim Hakman secured the silver medal and the second available Olympic quota in the discipline with 206.6 points, while Torben Grimmel of Denmark placed third with an overall final score of 186.4 points.

The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup will continue in Changwon tomorrow with the women’s 50m rifle three positions and women’s 10m air pistol finals.

All finals will be broadcast live here.
