Sydney 2000 gold medallist Deborah Font has announced her retirement from elite competition, bringing down the curtain on a career spanning four Paralympic Games.

The 29-year-old Spaniard, who won gold in the women’s SB12 100 metres breaststroke in the Australian city on her Paralympic debut, now intends to work towards a diploma in social work at the National University of Distance Education in Madrid.

She is also preparing for market entry labour, supported by the Spanish Paralympic Committee, the Sports Council of Spain and the Plan ADOP, which is driven by the National Organisation of Spanish Blind People (ONCE) Foundation.

Created in 2005, Plan ADOP is an initiative which aims to provide Spaniards the best possible conditions to carry out their preparations and thus ensure success for their country at the Paralympic Games.

Font also claimed the 400m freestyle S12 bronze medal in Sydney, before taking silver in the corresponding event at Athens 2004.

Silver in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m medley SM12 took Font’s medal tally to three in the Greek capital, after which she won bronze medals at Beijing 2008, in the 50m freestyle S12, and London 2012, in the 400m freestyle S12.

The seven-time Paralympic medallist, who spent much of her career training in her native Tarragona, Barcelona and Madrid, also won gold at the 2006 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships in Durban, and the 2014 IPC European Championships in Eindhoven, competing in the 400m freestyle S12 and S13 events respectively.
