The Organising Committee have been pleased with the uptake so far, and they also revealed that tickets for the Opening Ceremony and the special swimming package have been the best sellers to date.

More than 40 per cent of Opening Ceremony seats have been sold, while fans appear eager to see Papua New Guinea’s swimming star Ryan Pini, a three-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist, compete in what is expected to be his last Pacific Games as swimming tickets have also been quickly snapped up.

“The number of tickets sold so far within a short period of time signifies that people of Papua New Guinea are excited about the event and want to be part of it,” Port Moresby 2015 chief executive Peter Stewart said.

“We want to encourage others who are still deciding to get in fast so you won’t be disappointed at the last minute.”

The Games, due to take place from July 4 to 18, are set to be the biggest sporting event in Papua New Guinea’s history, with 3,000 athletes from 21 nations set to compete across 28 different sports, and Stewart believes the promising early ticket sales show they are ready to stage a successful event.

“The Games will be here in the next 87 days,” he said.

“The sale of the tickets means we are Games ready and the venues will be available in plenty of time for us to deliver the Games.”

The Papua New Guinean public appear to have responded well to the cost of tickets for the Pacific Games, which start as low as K10 (£2.50/$3.75/€3.50).

They officially went on sale on April 3 in 17 Bank South Pacific branches across the nation and the Organising Committee will be announcing more outlets where fans can purchase tickets soon.
