Competitors from Australia, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Samoa are preparing for this week’s historic International Table Tennis Federation Oceania Para-Table Tennis Championships in Bendigo, where able-bodied athletes will also be competing in the Oceania Cup.

The tournament, taking place in the Australian city from Friday (April 10) to Sunday (April 12), marks the first time an event has integrated able-bodied and Para-table tennis athletes in the history of the sport’s world governing body.

Perhaps most importantly, it will see up to 21 of the total 22 men and 10 women competing qualifying for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The home athletes will be hoping for a repeat of the 2013 edition of the Championships, where they beat New Caledonia and New Zealand to top the medals table with three gold, two silver and one bronze.

Australia will be particularly confident with the likes of Melissa Tapper, who will be competing in both the able-bodied and Para events, and Daniela Di Toro on the team.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and Oceania Para-Table Tennis Championships gold medal winner Tapper is currently the world number four in Class 10 and is aiming to become the first Australian to participate in both the Olympics and Paralympics, while the event will be Di Toro's first international Para-table tennis competition after she made the switch to the sport from wheelchair tennis, in which she won two Paralympic medals.

New Zealand, meanwhile, will have Victor Kamizona, who will be looking to defend his Class 9-10 title that he claimed when he was the only overseas athlete to top the podium at the event two years ago when he defeated Australia’s Jason Meyn in the finals.

Elsewhere, Fiji’s five-athlete squad will be hoping for glory at what will be their first Oceania Para-Table Tennis Championships.

It will also provide them with an early taster of the competition ahead of the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games, due to take place from July 4 to 18.
