The four bins were donated to Suva City Council as part of the Olympic Week sports fair and placed in sport-centric areas, namely Thurston Gardens, Sea Breeze Park, My Suva Park and the University of the South Pacific, where high levels of litter had previously been an issue.

The bins themselves are also designed to encourage recycling in the Fijian capital, which recently hosted the National Sports Science Conference ahead of this year's Pacific Games in Port Moresby, and feature two separate compartments, one each for recyclable and non-recyclables.

FASANOC vice-president Makarita Lenoa and its chief executive Lorraine Mar were on hand to present the bins to Suva City Council's senior health inspector Naresh Narayan.

They will now be serviced by Suva City Council and it is hoped the reduced rubbish in the areas will increase participation in sports.

FASANOC said in a statement that the move is part of its ongoing efforts to join the International Olympic Committee to "promote sustainable development through sport".

The National Olympic Committee has long been involved in environmental activities in the area, with clean ups and tree planting campaigns having previously taken place in Suva.
