Paralympic champions Canada fell to defeat to an unbeaten United States team ©Getty ImagesThe United States defeated Paralmypic gold medallists Canada in their final game of the 2015 Americas Wheelchair Basketball Challenge to win the tournament in Toronto.


The teams were meeting for the first time at the tournament, which is serving as a warm-up event ahead of the Parapan Am Games, having both played South American nations Argentina and Brazil twice.

Hosts Canada were aiming for a fourth win in five matches at the tournament, having suffered a defeat to Brazil on Tuesday (March 23), but they came up second best in their encounter a US team boasting a 100 per cent record at the event.

The Americans got off to a fast start by racing into an 18-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and their strength in depth throughout the team told throughout the match.

Despite Adam Lancia and Nik Goncin scoring 19 and 17 points respectively for Canada, the US team held off the hosts to clinch a 67-54 triumph and win the tournament.

Brazil triumphed in the battle of the South American nations, with Luciano Silva top scoring for the third consecutive match, earning his team 18 points.

Gelson Silva Junior added a further 15 points to help Brazil secure their second win of the tournament 71-53, while Argentina leave Canada without a victory to their credit.

The teams are likely to meet again at the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games, due to begin on August 7, with the top two finishes at the tournament set to book places at Rio 2016.
