The German Olympic Sports Confederation general assembly have approved Hamburg's candidacy ©DSOBHamburg has been formally approved as the German contender for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) General Assembly at St Paul's Church in Frankfurt today.

Hamburg was chosen ahead of capital city Berlin after a meeting of the DOSB's eight-member ruling Bureau on Monday (March 16) and, as expected, it has now been rubber-stamped by the membership at large.

All 410 delegates voting in favour of Hamburg's candidacy for either the 2024, should their initial bid prove unsuccessful, the 2028 Games.

DOSB President Alfons Hörmann declared afterwards that "all concerns are off the table".

"It is a fascinating opportunity for the whole country," he added.

Among those present at the meeting was Berlin Mayor Michael Müller, despite his city missing out on the German candidacy, with Hörmann claiming his support for the Hamburg bid was "perhaps the most important signal that day".

A referendum is now expected in the German second city before September with citizens set to polled on whether they approve the cities bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

An opinion poll published last week, prior to Hamburg's nomination, showed 64 per cent of 1,500 Hamburg residents surveyed approving the city hosting the Games.

The DOSB will hope the level of support remains as the poll approaches, after Munich's proposed bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics was dropped after a similar referendum.

The deadline for bids to be officially presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is September 15, with the host set to be confirmed at the 2017 IOC Session in Peruvian capital Lima.

If Hamburg is selected, it would become the third German city to host the Summer Games, after Berlin in 1936 and Munich in 1972.

They will face competition from the Italian capital Rome and Boston, after the city was successfully selected for the United States candidacy, with Paris also widely tipped to launch a bid for what would be the centenary of the Paris 1924 Games.

Istanbul, Budapest, Baku and Doha have all been mooted as other potential contenders.
