Maas claimed an impressive haul of 143.25 points thanks to an excellent performance in which she landed a backside 720 tail and frontside 360.

Switzerland's Lia-Mara Boesch, considered a rising star in the sport, took second just 6.25 points adrift to cap off a superb World Cup debut, while Klaudia Medlova of Slovakia rounded off the podium by finishing third.

"Finishing first was definitely my goal," the 30-year old Dutchwoman said.

"I was sure that I had the capability to win today.

"I was really focused although my training went better than my competition.

"It's great to finally have my first win and you always try super hard to beat everyone."

The men's competition proved particularly successful for host nation Canada as youngster Darcy Sharpe sealed the win ahead of compatriot Tyler Nicholson with 187.75 points.

Sharpe impressed the judges with a solid run that saw him perform a switch backside 1260 and a frontside 1080, which gave the World Championships silver medallist an unassailable total.

Nicholson, who had managed to squeeze through to the final by virtue of a ninth-placed qualification finish, fell short by 10.25 points, while Eric Beauchemin earned the first podium spot of his career as he took third.

"That 1-2-punch feels so great," Nicholson, who hails from Ontario, said.

"We had lunch together today and we were talking that we had to get one, two together.

"It's pretty funny to see that it has happened.

"It's good to see such a big crowd come out for this event."

The event is due to continue with the men's and women's slopestyle competitions tomorrow
