The Czech multiple World Championships gold medallist claimed the top podium spot in the women's 3,000 metres race with a time of 4min 02.17sec.

She came in before home star and fellow Olympic champion Ireen Wüst and another home athlete Marije Joling, who finished in 4:03.46 and 4:05.51 to take the silver and gold medals respectively.

Wüst admitted she was disappointed to not claim the title, but said she is confident in her chances to claim the 1,500m gold on Sunday (February 15).

The other competition of the day was the men's 10,000m race, where the host nation once again managed two medals - this time gold and silver.

Olympic champion over the distance Jorrit Bergsma came in first to win with a time of 12:54.82 and was followed home by Erik Jan Kooiman in 13:02.57.

The bronze medal went to Germany's Patrick Beckert, who managed a time of 13:10.95.

The action in Heerenveen is due to continue tomorrow with the women's 1,000m and 5,000m, and the men's 1,500m and team pursuit.

The competition concludes on Sunday.
