Morriss, who assumed the role in September 2010, is seen as having led a revival of the sport in recent years, particularly at a grassroots level, where boccia has enjoyed increased participation at both schools and clubs.

The official is leaving to become coaching and development officer at Squash New Zealand, where he will hope to have similar success in raising the profile of the discipline.

"I am really pleased to be leaving the organisation in a much better position than when I first started," Moriss said on his departure.

"The sport now has a number of new opportunities which can continue the development boccia has experienced in recent years.

"I would like to thank everyone for the effort and support you have shown as we have worked to rebuild the sport of boccia throughout New Zealand.

"I am looking forward to a new challenge ensuring that community sport continues to grow in capability".

At an elite level, New Zealand has never won a Paralympic boccia medal, and did not qualify a team at London 2012, but have enjoyed some strong performances at an international level nonetheless, for which Moriss has also been praised.

"Luke has done an outstanding job leading a successful organisational restructure during his time with us," said Boccia New Zealand Board President Harvey Brunt,

"Luke has been an integral part of Boccia during a pivotal period for the sport and organisation.

"His work in growing participation rates and organisation capability has given us a great platform from which to continue from."

Morriss is due to take up his squash role next month but will remain involved with Boccia New Zealand in a support capacity until a new director is appointed.
