Classic Auctions have the jersey, worn by McClanahan when America earned what is still regarded as one of the biggest shocks in sporting history by beating the imperious Soviet Union, listed on their website.

The current bid stands at $12,974 (£8,460/€11,300).

The United States national team was largely made up of amateur and collegiate players when they claimed a 4-3 triumph over a Soviet side who had won six of the previous seven Olympic ice hockey golds.

McClanahan, who played as a centre, was an integral part of the "Miracle on Ice" team that eventually clinched gold by beating Finland in the final.

The Soviet Union had in fact inflicted a crushing 10-3 defeat on the American team in a pre-tournament friendly before Herb Brooks guided his side to the sweetest revenge in the Olympic competition.

Brooks, who died in August 2003, also led the US team to Olympic silver at Salt Lake City 2002 but he will forever be remembered for the historic 1980 gold.

The authentic white jersey shows some clear wear and tear such as a board burn on the upper blue stripe on the right front tail, red paint transfer below the "4" on the left sleeve, a white diagonal mark on the bottom of the "2" sewn on the back, and sweat stains on each cuff.

In November, right-wing John Harrington's shirt from the same game fetched a staggering $71,700 (£45,800/€57,300).

That sale followed on from the $657,250 (£419,450/€524,850) paid for captain Mike Eruzione's jersey last year, a record for an Olympic uniform at auction.
