Granada will start hosting the event from February 4 ©Granada2015Štrbské Pleso and Osrblie in Slovakia is hosting the first of two Opening Ceremonies at this years' Winter Universiade tonight, with the venue due to stage Nordic and Biathlon events, while the official opening will take place in Granada, Spain, next month.


Granada were due to host the full event but it was later announced they would co-host with Slovakia, due to problems faced by the Organising Committee in staging the Nordic and biathlon events in Granada.

Cross country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping events will be held at Štrbské Pleso, while Osrblie will stage the biathlon.

Following the Opening Ceremony, the Slovakian venues will stage seven competition days with university students from across the world competing.

There will be 26 medals awarded in Slovakia, with 43 nations competing at the Winter Universiade and over 1,500 athletes taking part.

Competition in Slovakia will draw to a close on February 1 and attention will then turn to Granada itself, with the Opening Ceremony on February 4.

Granada will host Alpine skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, speed skating and snowboarding events, with 42 medals on offer.

The 27th Winter Universiade will end on February 14 with a second Closing Ceremony.

Almaty in Kazakhstan is due to host the 2017 edition of the multi-sport event, after Trentino withdrew its candidacy.
