Mexico and Rotterdam in The Netherlands will host the 2016 and 2017 World Triathlon Grand Finals respectively, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced.
Mexico has staged a number of ITU events, including the 1995 and 2002 World Championships, the 2006 Team Triathlon World Championships, which saw men and women competing in separate relays, and numerous World Cup races.
The exact host city of the Grand Final will be announced early in 2015.
Although The Netherlands has already hosted elite triathlon, having held a 2010 World Cup in Holten and the Cross Triathlon World Championships in The Hague last year, the city of Rotterdam will debut as the host of the Grand Final in 2017, for which it has proposed a circuit in the city on the famous peninsula Kop van Zuid in front of the New York Hotel.
"The opportunity to host the World Triathlon Series Grand Final offers a new prestigious event on our sports calendar and is a great boost for Dutch triathlon and for our National Federation," said Adriaan Visser, Vice-Mayor of Rotterdam and Alderman for Sports.
"Triathlon as an Olympic sport is rapidly growing and Rotterdam will offer a unique stage for the athletes, spectators and media.
"Rotterdam will welcome the ITU family with great enthusiasm."
Marisol Casado, the President of the ITU and an International Olympic Committee member, said the body is looking forward to taking the Grand Finals to both Mexico and Rotterdam.
"As unique and popular tourist destinations with ideal settings for triathlon, Mexico and The Netherlands will offer world class competition, as well as non-stop action for athletes, families and fans over a thrilling week of racing that is free to watch," she added.
Next year's World Triathlon Grand Final is due to be held in Chicago from September 15 to 20.
