The London 2012 Olympic silver medallists defeated this year's World Cup runners up Australia 3-1 in a shootout after the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Both sides worked hard for the medals, with the teams matching in terms of chances and possession, but it was not until the 35th minute that the opening goal came from Australian new cap Kathryn Slattery.

Luciana Aymar, playing in her last major international tournament, drew the hosts equal just four minutes later.

The shootout saw Aymar starting the ball rolling, before two Australian misses.

Further goals from Carla Rebecchi and Silvina D'elia secured the win for Argentina.

Meanwhile, this year's World Cup winners The Netherlands claimed the bronze medal with a 2-1 defeat of New Zealand as goals came from Lidewij Welten and Xan de Waard for the winners, and from Sophie Cocks for the fourth place finishers.

"We got off to a good start, although we should have scored more goals," Welten said.

"But although we look like the same team that won the World Cup, we are different.

"We have new players, we are learning new systems.

"We are making progress but we are nowhere near where we want to be yet."

England survived a shoot-out against China to take fifth place in the tournament.

Shona McCallin scored to give England a lead in the first quarter, but China equalised with a goal from Cui Qiuxia in the 42nd minute.

The shoot-out finished 3-2 in England's favour, with Laura Unsworth scoring the sudden death winner.

Germany finished in seventh place after defeating Japan 5-3.
