The Mexican received 165 votes to the Sheikh's 128 to enter his ninth term as President of shooting's world governing body.

The four-time Olympian was first elected to head the body in 1980.

"Thank you for your loyalty and for your trust." Raña said to the delegates at the Assembly held at the Hilton Park Hotel in Munich.

"You have given me the opportunity to reaffirm my commitment to all sport shooters of the world and to this sport family that I love.

"You can be certain that for the upcoming four years, changes and developments will continue.

"We will keep on working on our agenda, to make us stronger, to reach more athletes all around the world, so that our beloved sport will become more attractive to people and more solid in the Olympic Movement.

"I am convinced that with your support the next four years will be really productive, because if we are united the future of our sport will be bright."

The Presidential election race was shrouded in controversy yesterday when Sheikh Salman, Kuwait's Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, was accused of using his Government position to try to influence voters.

As insidethegames exclusively revealed, official representatives of Sheikh Salman had been contacting Sports Ministers around the world on his behalf urging them to support his campaign and get their National Federations to vote for him. 

Alongside Raña, Germany's Franz Schreiber was elected as the new ISSF secretary general by unanimous decision of the General Assembly.

Schreiber had been acting as the current interim ISSF secretary general having replaced his father, Horst, who died in 2010

"Thank you very much for your support," he said.

"I am a little speechless.

"I will do my best to continue working in the way I did, and I will do my best in favor of the shooting sport family." 

The Assembly also saw the election of four vice-presidents to join Raña and Schreiber in shaping the ISSF.

Incumbent vice-presidents, Luciano Rossi of Italy and Gary Anderson of the United States, were re-elected with 222 and 184 votes respectively, while China's two-time Olympic gold medallist Wang Yifu and Russia's Vladimir Lisin, President of the European Shooting Confederationwere elected for the first time.

Yifu received 209 votes and Lisin 182.
