The Russian Shooting Union's bid to host the 2017 World Shotgun Championships in Moscow has been successful ©ESCMoscow today beat Slovenian town Gaj-Maribor to win its bid to host the 2017 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Championships.


The Russian capital polled 204 of the 287 votes at the ISSF General Assembly at the Hilton Park Hotel in Munich, with its Slovenian rival earning 75 votes.

It will be the first occasion the Championships has been hosted in Russia since it was launched in 1934. 

The event will be held held at the Fox Lodge shooting range in the Dmitrov district, which is 40 miles north of Moscow, and is a ISSF accredited training venue, as well as the main training centre of the Russian shotgun shooting team. 

There will be five combined shotgun layouts will be used for the competition, all equipped with Laporte clay-machines and Elettronica Progetti phono-pull systems.

Rest areas for the athletes will be in place to welcome a large number of participants, and equipment service will be provided to all competitors.

Direct transfer from and to Moscow's international airports will be arranged for athletes and officials.

Visas and custom clearance support will also be in place for all participants arriving at the official airports, where English-speaking staff will help the teams upon their arrival. 

Official accommodation will be provided in 10 hotels of different categories, all located less than 30 minutes away from the range, Russian officials promised.

The Russian Shooting Union also presented a comprehensive promotion and media coverage plan, and announced spectators will enjoy a large welcome area and covered tribunes, as well as an expo area and several catering opportunities at the venue.

There had initially been eight candidates to host the event but Tuscon in the United States, Granada in Spain, Nicosia in Cyprus, Acapulco in Mexico, New Delhi in India and Mosta in Malta all withdrew before the final vote. 

"This results pays off all the efforts we've put into this bid," Anna Leshchikova, chief executive of the Russian Shooting Union. 

"We have been working and we will work with a professional approach, but at the same time we put a lot of passion into this project, because we love the shooting sport.

"We believe it will be a great Championships."

The last Championships, which are held every two years, took place in 2013 in Peru's capital Lima, while the 2015 edition is due to be held in Lonato in Italy.
