The FIE has awarded a number of its flagship World Championships during its annual Congress in Rome ©FIEThe International Fencing Federation (FIE) has announced the hosts of a number of its flagship events over the next couple of years during its annual Congress in Rome, Italy.

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Senior World Championships and will serve as a test event for that year's Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It will be the first time Brazil has hosted the event and marks a huge year of sport for the South American nation.

The 2017 Senior World Championships were assigned to Leipzig, Germany, as the sole candidate after Doha pulled out of the running, while the 2015 Cadet and Junior World Championships will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Bourges, France will hold the 2016 Cadet and Junior World Championships.

Also announced were the hosts of the Veterans World Championships.

Limoges, France will host the event in 2015, Stralsund, Germany in 2016 and Maribor, Slovenia in 2017.

The Russian city of Kazan hosted the 2014 edition of the Senior World Championships, while Moscow is set to host the same event in 2015.
