An incident at the Maiden Tower, the location of the event, is the reason for the postponement, Baku 2015 revealed to insidethegames.

"We have decided to postpone the ceremony this evening due to an 'incident' at the Maiden Tower which was the location of the event," a Baku 2015 spokesperson told insidethegames.

"It will now be held at the same time [8pm in Baku] on Wednesday (November 26), at the same location."

No further details were given, however.

Details regarding the mascot for the inaugural European Games were set to be announced at the event this evening, with this information now set to be released tomorrow.

The unspecified incident comes at a time of escalating tensions between Azerbaijan and neighbours Armenia.

The two countries have recently been in renewed conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh, a landlocked region in the South Caucasus which lies within Azerbaijan's internationally recognised borders.

Tensions escalated last week when Azerbaijan shot down what it claimed was an Armenian military helicopter east of Nagorno-Karabakh, killing three crew members.

It was the first time an aircraft was downed in the conflict zone in the past 20 years.

Armenia vowed to retaliate over the incident.

On Saturday (November 22), the Azerbaijan Government also claimed Armenian armed forces had broken a ceasefire, brokered by Russian in 1994, 75 times in the last 24 hours.
