Simon Clegg, Baku 2015 chief operating officer, welcomes Vanja Udovičić, Serbia's Minister of Youth and Sports to the organisation's headquarters ©Baku 2015Serbian Minister for Youth and Sport Vanja Udovičić has paid a visit to the headquarters of the Baku 2015 European Games as preparations continue ahead of the inaugural event next June.

Udovičić was one of the most talented Serbian water polo players during his illustrious career, which spanned 15 seasons.

Playing for one of the best water polo nation's in the world, Udovičić helped his team to World Championship titles in 2005 and 2009, European gold in 2002, 2006 and 2012, and three Olympic medals, silver at Athens 2004, and bronze at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Following his playing career, the 32-year-old moved into politics where he was appointed Minister for Youth and Sport in September 2013. 

Udovičić is visiting Azerbaijan for the Global Forum on Youth Policies, which began on Tuesday (October 28), and was updated on all of the latest progress and developments being made before next year's inaugural European Games

"I was very pleased to be able to visit the Baku 2015 offices and some of the competition venues and facilities," he said.

"This was also an excellent opportunity for me to meet some of the Serbian members of the Baku 2015 team that are helping to make the European Games come alive next year.

"In Serbia, our athletes are aware that the European Games as an important event that will become one of the major multi-sport events on the international calendar, so they are very excited about the opportunity to represent our country here in Baku."

With 50 per cent of the sports qualification process now complete, Serbia have qualified athletes to compete in basketball 3x3, boxing, canoe sprint, gymnastics and wrestling.

Following the visit, Simon Clegg, chief operating officer for Baku 2015 said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Udovičić to the Baku 2015 headquarters.

"Serbia will be sending a strong team to the inaugural European Games, and we are looking forward to welcoming their athletes to the competition here next year."
