Hall will take his place alongside the greats of Australian tennis after a stellar career that saw him claim nine Australian Opens, eight US Opens and seven British Open titles.

Hall lost his legs in a car accident at the age of 16 and began his career three years later.

His first major win came at the Australian Open in 1995 and over the next 10 years he consistently topped the men's singles world rankings, as well as picking up a number of major doubles titles.

By the time he retired in 2006, Hall had amassed 19 Super Series titles.

Across three Paralympic Games from Atlanta 1996 to Athens 2004, he won six medals, including three silver and two bronze.

The highlight came, however, at his home Games in Sydney in 2000 as he claimed gold in the men's singles event.

Hall also helped lead his country to four World Team Cups and won two NEC Singles Masters titles, in 2002 and 2004.

In 2010, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, while in the same year he was appointed as a wheelchair tennis ambassador by the International Tennis Federation.

"It is a wonderful honour, especially considering the rich history Australian tennis has had over the years," said the 44-year-old, who was also awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2001.

"To be thought of as being a small part of that history is very humbling for me.

"Tennis has given me more than I could ever repay and for that I will always be grateful."

The Sydney native continues to be involved in the promotion of wheelchair tennis and is the Optus Australia Wheelchair Ambassador.

He also sits on the selection panel for Australia's Most Outstanding Athlete with a Disability as part of the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards.

Hall is due to unveil a bronze bust in his likeness in Melbourne Park's Garden Square next January during the Australian Open, which takes place from January 19 to February 1.
