The 25-year-old reigning champion scored a total of 92.165 points to finish above Russia's David Belyavskiy on 90.748 and China's Deng Shudi on 90.630.

The final, involving the top 24 gymnasts, is scheduled for Thursday (October 9).

Meanwhile in the team competition, Japan's score of 361.609 saw them advance to the final in second place.

Despite several mistakes on the pommel horse and horizontal bar, the team, which consists of Uchimura, Kohei Kameyama, Ryohei Kato, Shogo Nonomura, Kenzo Shirai, Kazuyuki Takeda and Yusuke Tanaka, came closest to matching China's score of 362.698 from yesterday.
