The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed that Guillermo Olaso's punishment will stand ©Getty ImagesSpanish tennis player Guillermo Olaso's appeal against a five-year ban for match fixing has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), it was announced today.

Olaso was found guilty of three corruption offences, dating back to 2010, by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) in December 2013, for which he also received a $25,000 (£15,000/€20,000) fine.

He was punished for "contriving or attempting to contrive the outcome or any other aspect of any event" and two counts of failing to report approaches to provide inside information or influence the outcome of any aspect of a match.

A CAS statement announcing the failed appeal read: "The CAS Panel dismissed the player's arguments and confirmed the challenged decision in its entirety, finding that the sanction was proportionate and appropriate in the circumstances."

The CAS said the case centred on "'irregularities" in a match at the ATP Challenger-level President's Cup event played in Astana, Kazakhstan in November 2010.

Then ranked world number 232, Olaso lost 6-3, 6-3 in the first round to Kazakhstan wild-card entrant, Daniil Braun, whose ATP ranking rose to world number 905 after the tournament.

Olaso served zero aces, eight double faults and landed just 45 per cent of his first serves, according to ATP statistical records of the match.

''Irregular betting patterns had been flagged to the TIU in advance of the match, with bets having been placed on the lower ranked player to win,'' added the statement.

Olaso will not have to serve the final 18 months of his ban - which started on December 23 last year - if he has repaid his fine by that time and has attended anti-corruption and rehabilitation courses.

It means the ban could end in June 2017.
