In front of a capacity crowd of 2,000, the hosts caused a shock against top seeds Germany with a 3-1 win.

It ended Germany's streak of six consecutive gold medals since 2007.

Marcos Freitas led from the front in the opening match beating Steffen Mengel 11-8, 11-8, 11-8.

But Germany bounced back as world number nine Timo Boll beat Joao Monteiro 11-7, 11-1, 11-8.

In the third match, Tiago Apolonia got the home side back on track with an 11-7, 11-2, 11-13, 11-9 win over world number four Dimitrij Ovtcharov.

Freitas, the 2014 International Table Tennis Federation Europe Cup winner, was back in action in the decisive final encounter.

He beat former world number one Boll 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-9 to spark euphoric scenes in Lisbon at the end of five days of action.

Despite the defeat, Germany's women restored some pride for the nation by defending their team title.

They beat Austria 3-0 to claim their sixth crown in the history of the European Championships.

Shan Xiaona overcame Sofia Polcanova 5-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, while Han Ying beat Liu Jia 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-5, 12-10.

Petrissa Solja sealed victory for Germany with an 11-4, 11-3, 11-9 win over Li Qiangbing.
