The signed pair of white Converse sneakers were worn by Jordan during the United States 96-65 win over Spain at The Forum in Inglewood.

Jordan averaged 17 points during America's run to the gold medal and a ball boy at the match claims that the star signed them and gave them to him after the match.

The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, is now handing the shoes over to Grey Flannel Auctions who are putting them up for auction next month with a starting price of $5,000 (£3,082/€3,865).

Grey Flannel's Michael Russek claimed the auction house verified the chain of custody of the shoes by confirming that the consignor was indeed a ball boy and of pictures of him being presented with the shoes in the locker room after the gold medal match. 

Grey Flannel handled the sale of Jordan's "Flu Game" shoes last December which sold for $104,765 (£64,598/€80,959).

The "Flu Game" refers to game five of the 1997 National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals when Jordan was reportedly suffering from flu-like symptoms but still managed to score 38 points for the Chicago Bulls in their victory over the Utah Jazz.

Jordan began his professional career shortly after the 1984 Olympic final signing with the Chicago Bulls, going onto become arguably the greatest basketball player in history.

He won six NBA titles with the Bulls and, in a career that ended with a spell at the Washington Wizards in 2003, he amassed 32,292 points and picked up 14 NBA All Star awards.

He was also part of the so called US "Dream Team" that won Olympic gold at Barcelona 1992.

Shortly after turning professional, Jordan also signed with US sportswear giant Nike were he has gone on to become one of the firm's most successful ever athletes launching the Air Jordan brand which continues to be one of the most commercially successful basketball footwear and apparel brands in the world.

Jordan, 51, is reported to earn around $100 million (£62 million/€77 million) a year through his Nike endorsement contract.

Last month Grey Flannel Auctions handled the sale of Vin Baker's basketball gold medal from the Sydney 200 Olympics, which sold for $67,643 (£40,787/€50,949) at auction.

An exact date has yet to be confirmed but a spokesman for Grey Flannel Auctions told insidethegames that the auction will open sometime in October and close in November.
