China enjoyed more medal success in the pool as swimming action came to a close ©Getty ImagesSwimming action ended with a splash here at the Summer Youth Olympic Games, with nine newly-crowned gold medallists bringing a conclusion to the week-long swim-fest inside the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Natatorium.

The highlight of the night came in the final race as China and Russia, the two powerhouses at these Games, continued their duel in the pool with a tense battle in the mixed 4x100 metres medley relay.

As has been the case in the majority of the relay races, China swam to victory yet again, with the quartet of Guangyuan Li, Yun He, Yufei Zhang and Hexin Yu clocking a time of 3min 49.33sec to seal the gold medal.

It was not the only golden success of the night for China either, nor Li, with the 17-year-old backstroke specialist winning gold in the 200m backstroke competition.

With that loss in the relay, Russia were left to settle for just a single gold medal of the evening courtesy of Rozaliya Nasretdinova in the 50m freestyle.

Hungary have been one of the surprise packages of the Games so far, sitting sixth on the medals table with six gold medals.

Four of these golds have come in the pool, with two of that four being won on this final evening of swimming action.

The first of these was sealed by Liliana Szilagyi as she added 100m butterfly gold to the 200m title she won on Monday (August 18), while the second was picked up by Tamas Kenderesi in the men's 100m butterfly.

Outside of the pool, hosts China proved totally dominant in the two badminton finals being contested today as Bingjiao He provided the crowds with a brilliant comeback victory over Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the women's singles and Yuqi Shi bested compatriot Guipi Lin in an all-Chinese men's final.

The road race was the climax of a five event cycling competition as Colombia and Italy recorded sufficient results to gain overall gold medals in the men's and women's team events respectively.

Changxin Liu's attempts to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Xueying Zhu in the trampoline gymnastics were cut short in the final as New Zealand's Dylan Schmidt finished 0.400 points ahead of his Chinese rival to take gold in the men's contest.

Thailand's Duanganksorn Chaidee continued her country's impressive form at these Games with victory in the women's over 63 kilogram weightlifting contest, while Russia's Khetag Khugaev lifted 355kg for victory in the men's 85kg competition.

The International Olympic Committee's commitment to unity and friendship was in the spotlight again today as Egypt's Hadir Mekhimar and Hungary's Istva Pesi shot their way to gold in the 10m air rifle mixed international team gold medal match.
